Fire Safety

Most important to know is if/when a fire breaks out in your home Call 911, get out and Stay out!
But on top of that here are a few Fire Safety tips that everyone in your house should know.

Smoke Alarms

  • Place smoke alarms outside each sleeping area, inside any bedroom where the door is typically shut (recommended) and on every story of the house, including the basement.

  • Install wall-mounted smoke alarms 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling, and ceiling-mounted models at least 4 inches from the nearest wall.

  • Install a smoke alarm on every level of your house.

  • Test units monthly.

  • Install new batteries immediately when the low-battery warning alarm sounds or at least once a year.

  • Clean smoke alarms regularly by vacuuming them with a brush attachment.

  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years to achieve optimum performance.

  • Never Paint over a smoke detector.

Close the Door before you Snore

Keeping your bedroom door closed while you sleep can save your life. Having the door closed does the following.

  • Slows the amount of smoke and toxic gases entering your room

  • Slows down the amount of heat entering the room

  • Keeps the flames at bay while you put your escape plan into action

When and how to use a Fire Extinguisher

Always put your safety first; if you are not confident in your ability to use a fire extinguisher, get out and call 9-1-1. The American Red Cross cautions you to evaluate the situation and ensure:

  • You are using the correct Fire Extinguisher (see chart)

  • Everyone has left or is leaving the home

  • The fire department has been called

  • The fire is small, not spreading, and there is not much smoke

  • Your back is to an exit you can use quickly

To use a fire extinguisher, remember the acronym PASS:

  • Pull the pin.

  • Aim low at the base of the fire.

  • Squeeze the handle slowly.

  • Sweep the nozzle side to side.
